Bringing History to Life at Southill Estate

Year 9 HPQ students explore Black British history through local heritage

As part of their Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) studies, our Year 9 students enjoyed a fascinating and enriching visit to Southill Estate, the historic home of Samuel Whitbread I. The visit formed a key part of their investigations into Black British History, allowing students to step beyond textbooks and engage directly with the places and stories connected to their research.

Guided by Charles Whitbread, students explored the Whitbread family’s significant abolitionist legacy, examining how wealth, power and social responsibility intersected during this period of British history. Through discussion and firsthand observation, students were encouraged to think critically about how historical fortunes were built and the lasting impact of the anti-slavery movement.

Experiencing these powerful historical connections right on our doorstep provided valuable primary context for students’ HPQ projects, helping them develop deeper understanding, independent research skills and informed perspectives.

We are extremely grateful to Charles Whitbread for his generosity, insight and time, and for helping our young researchers bring history to life in such a meaningful way.
