Samuel Whitbread Academy

From SWA to the Oscars

Hayder’s award-winning short film continues its remarkable journey

We are incredibly proud to share some exciting news about former Samuel Whitbread Academy student, Hayder Rothschild Hoozeer, whose short film Rock, Paper, Scissors has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards next year in the Best Live Action Short Film category.

The film has progressed from an initial list of more than 200 entries to the final 15 shortlisted films worldwide, an outstanding achievement that places Hayder’s work among the very best in international filmmaking. One further round of judging will determine the final five nominees who will go on to compete on the night of the awards.

Adding to this success, Rock, Paper, Scissors has also recently won a BAFTA, further recognising the exceptional quality and impact of the film. During a recent visit to Samuel Whitbread Academy, Hayder met with students and spoke openly about his creative journey, sharing his hopes and optimism as the film continues its path towards the Oscars. His visit provided a valuable and inspiring insight into the realities of working in the film industry.

Hayder’s achievements are a source of great pride for our school community and serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through passion, perseverance and creativity. We wish him every success as he moves forward and will be following the next stage of his journey with great anticipation.
