Students Explore Global Seismology at Cambridge University

This month, a group of our A Level Physics and Applied Science students recently had an exciting trip to Cambridge University to attend a specialist lecture.

The lecture, titled "Looking in the Earth: A Journey Through Global Seismology," provided a fascinating insight into the Earth's internal structure. The speaker discussed the latest discoveries in the field, including the identification of Large Low Velocity Provinces (LLVPs) at the core-mantle boundary—regions that play a critical role in our planet's dynamics.

Students learnt how scientists gather evidence about the Earth's interior using seismic waves and also heard about the incredible prospect of taking seismometers to Mars in the near future to study the internal structure of another planet. The talk concluded with the speaker sharing her own career path and journey in science, providing a valuable glimpse into the world of research for our students.

This trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect their classroom learning with cutting-edge scientific research and consider the diverse career options available in the physical sciences.
