Local Politics in Action: SWA Hosts School Parliament Group

On Tuesday, 25th November, Samuel Whitbread Academy welcomed students from Robert Bloomfield Academy and Shefford Lower School for the second meeting of the cross-school School Parliament Group. This collaborative initiative brings together young people from all three schools to explore political issues affecting their school, community, and the wider nation.

The group was delighted to welcome the new Mayor of Shefford, Councillor Nicola King, as their guest speaker. She shared her journey to becoming Mayor, the responsibilities of her role, and the key goals she hopes to achieve during her term. Following her inspiring talk, students from each school took part in a lively discussion focused on a range of school-level, local, and national political topics.

This meeting builds on the success of last year’s inaugural session, which included a visit from local MP Alistair Strathern. During that first meeting, students explored issues such as classroom disruptions, litter in school, and broader concerns like national flooding.

Once again, students demonstrated excellent commitment, offering thoughtful and creative solutions to the issues raised. The School Parliament Group continues to be a valuable platform for students to develop political awareness, strengthen their debating skills, and ensure their voices are heard on matters that truly affect them.
