Exploring Black History Through the Higher Project Qualification

We are proud to share that our students recently took part in an exciting and meaningful initiative, the Black History Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), developed in collaboration with Pearson Edexcel. This unique programme is designed for Key Stage 3 learners and encourages students to explore topics within Black History that are personal, local, and relevant to their school community.

The Black History HPQ was originally piloted by staff at Samuel Whitbread Academy and has since been recognised for its powerful impact on students' understanding of history. By focusing their HPQ on Black History, students not only deepen their historical knowledge, but also build essential academic skills such as planning, research and investigation, extended writing, and critical evaluation.

Our students approached this project with curiosity and commitment, uncovering stories and perspectives that are often overlooked in traditional history curriculums. The result was a series of thoughtful, well-researched projects that highlighted the significance of Black contributions and experiences in history.

We encourage all members of our school community to hear directly from students and staff who have taken part in this journey. Their reflections and insights have been captured in a series of short videos, available now on Pearson’s YouTube playlist. These videos offer a deeper look into the learning process and the lasting impact of this project on both individuals and the wider school environment.
