International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

This week, our staff and students had the privilege of attending the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade event hosted by SpectaculArts. The event was powerful, hard-hitting and challenging, an experience that was necessary for reflection and understanding.

Keynote speaker Nairobi Thompson addressed the ongoing impact of the racist legacy of slavery in our society today, exploring topics such as last year’s race riots in the UK and the changing legislation in America.

Our SWA students, alongside students from Northampton International Academy, spoke passionately about the need for change. They read out their own powerful poems and honoured those who lost their lives by speaking the names of African slaves during a moving candle-lighting ceremony.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Sharon De Leonardis and the SpectaculArts team for allowing our students to participate in such an important and meaningful event.
