A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

As we bring this academic year to a close, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the many achievements, memorable events, and heartfelt farewells that have made this year so special at Samuel Whitbread Academy.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to host a wide range of opportunities this term thanks to the generosity of our alumni, local businesses and wider community. From careers talks to university advice and vocational insights, students have benefited from invaluable guidance. A particular highlight was welcoming back BAFTA winner and former student Hayder Rothschild Hoozer, who inspired our Film students with a screening of his powerful short film Rock, Paper, Scissors. We wish Hayder every success on his continued journey, possibly all the way to the Oscars.

Our Year 10 Food Technology students impressed us all with their creativity and flair in their Afternoon Tea project, wowing staff and family members alike. Some students also had the opportunity to experience the culinary culture of Paris on a residential trip that included a visit to a theme park. Our thanks go to the Food Tech team for organising both of these wonderful experiences.

This term also saw our House Olympics and Sports Days, which highlighted not only the athleticism of our students but also their teamwork, resilience and spirit. Thank you to the PE department for your tireless efforts in bringing these events together.

Our summer musical production of 9 to 5 was another triumph, with students and staff delivering a professional and high-energy performance that delighted audiences throughout the week. Our Performing Arts faculty continues to shine, with further successes in Dance, where students have achieved awards at both national and international levels.

The Maths department has hosted an engaging competition, supported brilliantly by their summer interns. The Science faculty delivered a fantastic science fair showcasing the curiosity and innovation of our young scientists. Meanwhile, our Racing Team, restarted by Mr Brooks and a group of enthusiastic students from across years, is back in action and looking forward to its first event. They are currently seeking sponsors, and we encourage anyone interested to get in touch.

These are just a few of the exciting highlights from the past month. Over the year, we have seen exceptional effort and achievement across every area of school life, from academic and sporting successes and creative performances to inclusion initiatives and charitable fundraising. Each of these moments reflects the dedication, talent and community spirit that make our academy so special.

As the year ends, we also say goodbye to several valued members of staff:

Mr Ryan Nicholl, PE Teacher and Head of Year 9

Miss Maddy Hefford, Learning Support Assistant

Miss Lauren Beal, Learning Support Assistant

Ms Ines Macedo, MFL Teacher

Ms Vishalie Yadav, English Teacher

Ms Maria Burgess, SEND Administrator

Ms Cynthia Combe - Learning Supervisor

I would also like to wish Maddy and Cynthia the best of luck as they begin their training to become teachers. We thank them all for their service and commitment to the Academy and wish them every success in their future endeavours. They leave with our heartfelt gratitude.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our students, staff and families for their continued hard work, positivity and support throughout the year. I hope you all enjoy a well-deserved summer break filled with rest, joy and time with loved ones.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September for the start of another exciting chapter.

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Mr Nicholl

This has been an excellent year, and it truly feels like it has flown by! It has been a privilege to witness the students’ growth, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout. Our students have consistently made the most of the various opportunities presented to them by our truly amazing staff across the school. There have been far too many highlights to list individually, but having the chance to celebrate your successes and reflect on your journeys in our end-of-year assemblies has been particularly rewarding.

I know how excited you all are for the summer holidays, and rightly so! Please do enjoy this well-deserved break. It's a time to relax, recharge, and spend time with family and friends. However, the break is also an opportunity to look forward to what is to come. As you transition into Year 10, I want you to truly understand just how quickly the next two years will go. My biggest piece of advice is to take every opportunity to learn and develop. It's not always about the grand gestures; often, it's the small things you learn daily, the consistency in your effort and engagement, that make the biggest difference. Think about how you can bring that consistency into your lessons, both in and out of school.

On a personal note, this marks my final write-up as your Head of Year at Samuel Whitbread Academy. After seven wonderful years here, I will be moving on to take up the post of Head of Physical Education at Pix Brook Academy. I look back on my time at Samuel Whitbread fondly; it has been an incredible journey. I am genuinely looking forward to staying in contact with Samuel Whitbread Academy, as I have no doubt our paths will often cross, especially on the sports fields for future fixtures!

I want to extend a massive thank you to all the Year 9 students for your hard work, your spirit, and for making this year so memorable. You are a fantastic group, and I will miss working with you all.

My sincere gratitude also goes to our amazing team of form tutors and teachers who have supported Year 9 so diligently throughout the year. Your dedication and commitment to the students are truly commendable. A special mention to Mrs Saggers, Mrs Dainton and Mrs Clark, who have all been there to support and guide you as you continue to develop.

Finally, to all the parents & carers, thank you for your support over the year. The relationship between school, parents/carers, and students is absolutely key to success, and we sincerely hope that this strong partnership continues as students go into Year 10.

I wish you all a fantastic summer and every success in the future.

Year 10, Mrs Godfrey

As Year 10 comes to an end, I’d like to thank you for your continued support throughout the year. It’s been a pleasure to see how much the students have matured, both in their learning and in their attitudes. They’ve made real progress and shown resilience, and we’re proud of the young people they’re becoming. As they head into Year 11 and begin their final GCSE preparations, we’re confident they’ll rise to the challenge.

For now, we hope they enjoy a well-earned summer break, full of rest, laughter and time to recharge with family and friends.

Have a great Summer!

Year 12, Ms Hoad

Year 12 have had an excellent end of year, enjoying their own version of Sports Day and our final achievement assembly full of tutor and subject awards.

The year has been filled with accomplishments inside and outside of school, with many students attaining excellent exam results, closely followed by a stellar week of work experience.

We had so many compliments from employers, many of whom are celebrating our students being their ‘best ever’ placements.  We thank all the parents and extended family members who gave our students such valuable experiences of the world beyond SWA.

This term, we have worked on thinking about their next steps beyond SWA – university, apprenticeships, or employment – and we would encourage students and parents/carers to continue to explore and research during the summer holidays.  Support and resources for this can be found on the student's Google Classroom for the year group.  Advance warning that we will be having an Information Evening on 11th September, where we will be offering advice and support.

Those who love to plan ahead might find it useful to know that we have booked their Year 13 Prom for Friday 3rd July 2026 – so if anyone is booking a post-exam holiday, please don’t book before Wednesday 24th June 2026 (National Contingency Day for exams) – and then they might want to be back in time for prom!

Some of our students are awaiting Level 3 BTEC and AS Further Maths results, and we welcome them to A-level results day on August 14th.  Information about results can be found on our website or by emailing examofficer@bestacademies.org.uk

We wish our students a restful and happy holiday, and we look forward to seeing them back to start Year 13 on Thursday, 4th September.
