A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break over the half-term and maybe got to catch up with family and friends.

February has been an eventful month, filled with some notable achievements and enriching experiences across the academy.

From February 10th to 14th, we celebrated International Week, concluding with a special day dedicated to recognising and embracing the diversity within our community. Students participated in a number of engaging workshops, including cultural dance and foods from around the world, making it a truly memorable occasion. I would like to thank all the students, staff and friends of the school who helped make this such a successful event.

Our ski trip to Norway was a tremendous success. It provided some students with the opportunity to learn how to ski and others with the chance to refine their skills while creating lifelong memories. A big thank you to the staff who dedicated their time and effort to making this trip possible and for bringing everyone back in one piece. This is the first time that we have ever been to Norway, and it certainly won’t be the last!

Congratulations to Henry S, William K, and James H, who excelled in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge and secured a place in the next round, which will take place on March 20th. This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish them the very best.

In the Performing Arts department, rehearsals for our summer musical, 9 to 5, are well underway, and the production is already showing great promise. It is shaping up to be an outstanding performance, and although ‘it’s no way to make a living’, I have no doubt it will be an event to remember.

Our sports teams have continued to excel. The U14 and U15 netball teams secured their places in the SNS National Semi-Finals, while the 1st XI boys’ football team delivered an impressive 5-0 victory over Carre’s Grammar School in the ESFA National Quarter-Final, earning them a well-deserved spot in the semi-finals. Additionally, the U16 Rugby 7s team made a strong start to their season, returning home from Leicester Grammar as tournament champions and securing a place in the England 7s tournament later in the month.

This week, our Year 12 Geography students embarked on the annual Dorset trip, where they will have the opportunity to explore the Jurassic Coast. We are eager to hear about their adventures when they return.

Finally, I would like to commend our Year 11 students for their continued commitment to both their mock and formal examinations. Keep up the excellent work.

Thank you all for your dedication and enthusiasm as we embark on the next half-term.

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Mr Nicholl

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a good break. This fresh start is a great opportunity to assess your current targets or set new ones.

The options process is well underway, with a deadline of March 7, 2025. If you have any questions, please speak to your subject leaders, form tutor, or year team.

We have a busy half-term ahead, focusing on equality, respect, and integrity. The PSHE topics will include bullying, media and airbrushing, self-esteem, body confidence, and health and well-being.

A reminder: if students choose to bring their phones, they must be placed in pouches upon entering the school premises and removed only at the end of the school day. AirPods and headphones are not allowed during school hours. Regular inspections of uniforms, equipment, and phone pouches will take place throughout this half-term.

Year 10, Mrs Godfrey

I am pleased to share that Year 10 students have settled back into school routines exceptionally well since we returned in January. It has been great to see so many of them engaging positively in lessons.

As we look ahead, I would like to remind you that mock exams will take place after the Easter break. The exams start on Tuesday 22nd April. For one week, students will complete exams for all core subjects, including Geography/History and languages. These exams are an important opportunity for students to assess their progress and identify areas for improvement.

Over the coming weeks, we encourage students to revise regularly, make use of any resources provided by their teachers and seek support where needed.

We appreciate your continued support in helping your child stay motivated and prepared. If there is anything we can do as a year team to support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Year 11, Mr Rich

We are over the halfway mark now, and with mocks in full swing, it is a real challenge of resilience, but the year has taken it in their stride.

It is always a feat to come back from a break straight into exams, especially with them now similar in proximity to the real GCSEs. It is important to remember to keep afloat amidst the anxieties that naturally rise and look after your body and mind throughout. Set a good sleep routine, organise your equipment the night before, and don’t forget the things you enjoy.

Above all, be kind to yourself and act as your own best friend and champion. You’ve got this Year 11!

Year 12, Mrs Hoad

We are now more than halfway through Year 12, and the weeks are disappearing fast!

Reports (predicted grades and attitudes to learning) were issued this week.  The Year 12 UCAS trip (25th March) has filled up fast, and there are a few parents who have either missed a deposit payment on ParentMail or the consent form on Google - please respond to emails from our administrator if asked.

Opportunities for apprenticeship experiences and summer schools come regularly, and students must keep an eye on their emails to check for these alerts. We put all relevant information onto their year group Google Classroom.

Work experience was launched back in December, and students should be making good progress in securing placements for July. Help is available in room 902 from Miss Freeman or at lfreeman@bestacademies.org.uk

Year 9 Pointillism Art Work

Year 9 Art students have been creating exceptional oil pastel pointillism works. Inspired by the striking oil paintings of Melanie Dupre and the pointillist techniques of Paul Signac, these pieces showcase the students' understanding of colour, texture, and technique. Their dedication and creativity are evident in the finished works.

Well done, Year 9!
