E-NEWSLETTER  •  ISSUE 179

A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

We are two weeks into the half-term, and we’ve already completed and experienced so much at Samuel Whitbread.

Our Year 11 students have finished their last set of mocks and once again their attitude and level of commitment has been excellent, which all bodes well for the upcoming exams.

The rehearsals for Oliver are in full swing and going well. To take our productions to the next level, the Performing Arts department has decided to complete a 12-hour act/sing/dance-a-thon. Roughly 60 students and staff will be participating and will dance and sing continually from 7 am to 7 pm. To sponsor our amazing students, please see details below. The funds will be used to purchase new professional standard staging, lighting and sound equipment. All of which will enable us to challenge ourselves to improve productions year on year.

Sport is going well with several highlights, including our Year 9s who won the Leicester Grammar sevens. The first XI are also gearing up for their semi-final against Northampton School for Boys. As always, we wish them luck.

Finally, last week saw the final session for students on the Black Heritage programme, run by Sharon De Leonardis. Three Counties Radio covered the final session and were incredibly impressed with our students, who were able to articulate the impact of the programme on them personally and on the school. I would like to thank Mrs Brown and Dr Hague for organising such a worthwhile event.

Messages From Heads of Year

Yr 9, Mrs M Godfrey

I’d like to start by introducing myself. I’m Mrs Godfrey, the new Head of Year 9. I have been enjoying getting to know many of the students in our year group and have been really impressed with how they have been conducting themselves around the school.

As a year team, we are keen for students to be in lessons and on time. Therefore, students are not permitted to attend the year office during lesson time, unless there is a significant need. We have an open door during break and lunch for students to come and talk to the year team about any issues or concerns.

I would like to reiterate that the school starts with the warning bell for registration at 8.15 am, students must arrive on time so they can prepare for the day and ensure they are updated with all information which is shared during registration.

I look forward to the next few months getting to know more of the students.

Yr 11, Mr R Nicholl

It is always nice to start the newsletter entry with some praise! We have been so impressed with how the vast majority of the year group has completed the latest set of mocks. The individual preparation before the mock examinations has certainly helped to increase confidence when completing exam papers, this has also had a positive impact on managing stress and developing resilience.

Now that the Year 11 students have had the opportunity to try different revision strategies and create revision timetables, they should be in a position to use the strategies that have worked and shown the most impact when preparing for the GCSE examinations. Once the mock papers have been returned, students will have the opportunity to act on the feedback, fill any gaps in their learning and understand more about structuring answers and including the content that will help to maximise marks.

To develop new and existing strategies that many of our students have been using in the build-up to exams and to support our students in developing essential life skills, we have organised a day of workshops that will be led by an external organisation. NCS (National Citizen Service) / Hear 2 Listen will be running five different workshops with our students – Modern Problem Solving Skills, Stress Management, Exam Readiness, Developing Resilience, and Ambitions. For all Year 11 students to access this opportunity, we have split the year into populations.

Within the population, students will be split into their English groups. Each group will rotate around the workshops following the timings of our normal school day. Below are the dates:

  • Tuesday 12th March 2024, Population PR

  • Friday 15th March 2024, Population UV

  • Monday 25th March 2024, Population ST

Form tutors have shared the relevant information with their tutor groups. Students should speak to their tutor in the first instance if they have any questions regarding the workshops. More information on the organisation can be found on the link below:

The yearbook is always a popular item and we aim to ensure that this year is no different. We have been working hard to ensure that the year group can take this away with them to remind them of their time at Samuel Whitbread Academy. Both staff and students are contributing to the book, ensuring it is a great keepsake. It is a nice memento for students to look back on in years to come. The cost of the yearbook is £7. Please look out for a separate communication regarding this.

Just a reminder that we have the yearbook photos taking place on Wednesday 13th March. Each form group will come down and have a professional photograph taken (form tutors will share the timetable with the students). The photos will be used in the yearbook and to create our year group photo.

Thank you for your continued support with our Year 11 students. We understand that this is a stressful time but the year group really is developing the strategies to cope with stressful situations. Building resilience will support our students as they enter the next stage of learning.

Sestriere Ski Trip

The recently concluded half-term saw students from all years embark on an unforgettable trip to the picturesque Sestriere Ski Resort. The week was filled with skiing, bowling and scavenger hunts. The students also had the opportunity to bond and unwind through other activities such as bowling and baking. The scavenger hunt, on the other hand, provided them with an opportunity to explore the resort and discover its hidden gems.

As we look back on the week, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the staff who made the trip a resounding success. Their unwavering commitment and dedication played a crucial role in ensuring that the students had an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Izzy Takes On The London Marathon

Our incredible Sixth Former, Izzy Byers, is preparing to run the London Marathon to support the mental health charity Mind. Her effort to raise awareness for this noble cause has so far been remarkable as she has already raised £3,000, which is over her initial target of £2,000. As part of her marathon training, she ran the Richmond Half Marathon on February 18th and participated in the London Winter Run on February 25th to support Cancer Research UK.

We are incredibly proud of Izzy and her commitment to making a difference in the world. If you would like to donate to Mind in support of Izzy, please use the link below.

Good luck Izzy!

Year 12 Geography Trip To Dorset

Year 12 A-Level Geography students recently returned from a fantastic residential trip to Dorset. During this trip, the students participated in a variety of activities, including beach profiling, longshore drift measurement, questionnaires and non-participant observation.

These activities aimed to help the students collect data for their Non-Examined Assessment, and we are delighted by the level of dedication and enthusiasm they demonstrated. We would like to congratulate all of our students for their hard work and superb attitude during this trip.

Performing Arts-A-Thon

The Performing Arts department is gearing up for an incredible 12-hour Performing Arts-a-thon that promises to be a truly inspiring event. The aim of the event is twofold: to raise funds for the much-needed stage lights in the theatre and to support the upcoming summer musical, Oliver.

Over 70 talented and dedicated students will be taking part in this non-stop extravaganza, showcasing their skills in dance, drama, and music. It's going to be an incredible display of stamina, talent, and passion, as they push themselves to the limit in pursuit of a common goal. Throughout the day, guest artists will be popping in to boost morale and set new challenges, adding to the excitement and energy of the event. It's going to be a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and determination, as our students work together to achieve something truly remarkable.

Mixed Hockey Team

The U18 mixed hockey team played against Bedford Modern and won 3-1 before half-term. The game was filled with an excellent display of skill and enthusiasm and Hattie's captaincy was outstanding.

Congratulations to Lavinia and Archie for being awarded Player Of the Match, and well done to Harry and Oli for scoring goals. It was a unique experience to have four sets of siblings in the squad, which might be a record for SWA sport.

Congratulations to all involved!

Attendance Reminders

Reporting an Absence / Appointments - Students in Year 9, 10 and 11

Morning Registration

Please report absences from morning registration by using one of the following methods, preferably before 8.20 am:

Telephone the school on 01462 629900 (option 1) or 01462 628041 and follow the instructions for 'reporting a student absence' or via the Edulink website or Edulink App by selecting the absence reporting icon.

This will ensure absences are recorded correctly and promptly.

Please do not send notifications directly to tutors, teaching staff, Pastoral teams or via the school contact link on our website, as this can delay the reporting process and as a result absence calls may be sent out unnecessarily.

Please be aware that the software used to contact you if your child is absent and we are unaware of the reason, will alert the person who is listed as Contact 1 on your child’s records. The external number that you will be called from is 0114 303 4042 (Sheffield area code). To respond and stop automated calls, please leave a message when called, followed by pressing the # key.

Leaving during the school day

If your child needs to leave during the school day, please could you provide them with a note on the day.  This note can be shown to teaching staff/reception and it will enable them to sign out. If they have a note, you will not need to confirm via email, telephone or report via Edulink.

If you have any medical appointment slips/letters that you are happy to share with us, they can be handed in at reception at the time of signing out, or you can send them to me via email (amartin@bestacademies.org.uk) if that is easier.

Please feel free to contact the attendance office, 01462 628041 if you require any further information.

Term Dates

Term dates are published on our website and may differ from those published by Central Bedfordshire.

Reminder if your child is feeling unwell during the day

If a student feels unwell during the school day, they should ask their teacher if they can leave the lesson and report to the Medical Room, where a first-aider will assess the situation and take appropriate action.

If necessary, parents will be informed and asked to make arrangements for their child to return home. It is therefore vital that we are aware of the emergency contact number for all students and that we are informed of any changes as a matter of urgency. Please note that we are unable to send students home to an empty house. We take safeguarding extremely seriously, so we ask that students do not contact their parents in the first instance on their phone, all decisions should be authorised by the first-aider or a member of staff.

Inhalers

Students who have been prescribed an inhaler should carry a working, in-date inhaler which is clearly labelled with their name. They should bring this to school with them every day. We are a large site and the quickest way for your child to access their medication is if they are carrying it with them. WE DO NOT HOLD AN EMERGENCY INHALER IN SCHOOL.

Non-Prescription Medications

Students are permitted to carry non-prescribed medications for their use. We encourage a few of these to be carried on their person, so should they need to take them, they can without having to take time out to visit the medical room. Please note we do have emergency Paracetamols and Ibuprofen. However, if you or your child knows that they may need pain relief during the day (for example, if they have a head cold, or they have their period), send them to school with their usual dose.
Students will only be allowed to collect medication for pain relief during break and lunchtime.

Any questions, please direct them to SWA-firstaid@bestacademies.org.uk
