A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

The Spring term has started well with a number of highlights already this month.

On Friday we hosted the annual Shefford and Stotfold Student Conference, which this year focussed on well-being. Over 100 pupils, aged between 9 and 19, from 20 schools in our cluster came together to discuss how they can improve well-being of the young people in their schools. The day opened with a national keynote speaker, who talked about well-being and how our knowledge of this area has grown enormously over the last few years. The pupils then spent the second session moving around a carousel of different presenters, including music, art, PE, Forest School, meditation and even Willow, the school dog. During the final session, the pupils spent their time creating presentations for their headteachers, recommending one or more of the activities that they had seen during the day for their school to adopt.

This week we had a fantastic evening of celebration for our high attaining students who shared their achievements with their parents/carers during an evening of performances and presentations. Mrs Linehan was overwhelmed by the students’ work and delighted to share this with the community. If your child is interested in joining The Society they should speak with a member of the team and join The Google Classroom.

This week around 30 of our students took part in the 2nd of a six-week programme on Black Heritage, written and delivered by Sharon De Leonardis, who developed the programme to help students get in touch with their heritage. As CEO of SpectaculArts, Sharon wanted to educate students about their roots and has worked with schools all across the country. Following the initial session, Three Counties Radio covered the programme on their Friday night programme and this was then picked up by the BBC. This week we have also been contacted by ITV News about possibly covering the programme in the near future. We look forward to seeing the outcome of this exciting new programme over the weeks ahead.

The auditions for the musical Oliver are in full swing and the show is already shaping up to be another amazing extravaganza. We will have regular updates over the coming weeks.

In sport, we have had some great results, with the U16 girls basketball team gaining bronze in the county finals and the boys 1st XI beat Windsor Boys 7-1 to gain a place in the quarter-finals of the national cup and the U14B team beat Boston School and then Bedford Academy to reach the last 8 in the country. The U14 girls rugby also beat Robert Clack B 37 - 29 in an exciting game of rugby which swung back and forth throughout the game and was a fantastic experience for all the girls involved. Finally, last Friday, all four of our boys’ rugby teams played St Josephs in a fantastic evening of rugby at Bedford Athletic Rugby Club. Despite the freezing cold weather, all four teams came away with victories and demonstrated yet again how far we have come over the last few years.

Our recent changes to toilets have proven incredibly successful, and we are reviewing the next steps, and liaising with our student leadership team. I am incredibly proud of the maturity shown by our students and how well they have adapted. The Academy has seen no incidents of vandalism or reported anti-social behaviour over the past two weeks. If your child does vape please continue to converse with them, as we do not know the long-term health effects of this activity.

Finally, two incredibly talented students received amazing news this week with offers from Oxford and Cambridge. In addition, four students have received offers to study veterinary medicine. We are very proud of them all!

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 11, Mr R Nicholl

Happy New Year to you all! I hope that you had a restful break! It has been a busy start to the term, and it has been great to see so many Year 11 students reassess their goals in preparation for the upcoming summer exams and other pursuits. We have been discussing the importance of taking opportunities and making the most out of the experiences that are open to us. This was supported by an assembly by the National Citizen Service (NCS), which helps 15-17-year-olds build skills for work and life by taking part in new challenges and meeting new people, gaining confidence and independence along the way. You should have received a parent pack with some important information explaining how your child can be part of the NCS programme.

We have also discussed how the recent mock results should be seen as an opportunity – some will be happy with their results, some will be disappointed, but it is how the students learn from the experience that is important. How can they fill any gaps in specific topics? Are there specific topics that require additional revision? Are there types of questions – long answer for example, that require additional practice? If students are able to see their mock results as an opportunity to improve, it can only be a positive activity.

Students should continue to make the most of any intervention session that is taking place during form time, lunchtime or after school. If students would like to attend any intervention sessions, they should speak to their class teacher in the first instance. We have a set of mocks for the core subjects coming up (some option subjects will also have assessments that will take place in class), the week beginning 26th February. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks. This is an opportunity for students to develop specific areas and be assessed prior to the summer exams. Students should continue to discuss their progress with class teachers and form tutors. They will be happy to support you with any revision strategies, topic advice and exam techniques.

Whilst we always recommend a structured revision timetable (to start as soon as possible), we also recommend that students make sure that they are doing the things they enjoy around this. The pastoral team can support with devising a revision timetable, and we will be going through these during form time.

TOP #200 IN 2023

We are thrilled to share that Samuel Whitbread Academy has been ranked 135th in the country for sports by School Sports Magazine, thanks to our outstanding sporting achievements last year. This places us in the top 4% of schools across the nation for our commitment to athletics. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our talented students, supportive parents, and dedicated staff members whose hard work and dedication have made this achievement possible.

Thank you all for your unwavering support and for making our school proud.

SPECTACULARTS MENTORING PROGRAM

For 6 weeks we are running a mentoring programme for students. The program is being led by Sharon DeLeonardis from SpectaculArts, a talented actress, playwright, radio show host and mentor for black and dual heritage students. Her main objective is to help them develop their confidence and understanding of issues surrounding equality. She focuses on teaching students how they can use this knowledge to identify their needs and how to use their voices to make a change.

The program content is designed to help students acquire skills that will prepare them for their transition from school to university or the workplace. It includes teaching black history, developing confidence, working on presentation skills, and navigating meetings and boardrooms. These skills will undoubtedly prove useful for students in their future endeavours.

During the first session of the program, Sharon DeLeonardis led a radio broadcast on BBC Three Counties Radio, which aired on Friday, January 19th in the evening. The broadcast was a delightful insight into the work the students are doing, and there will be more broadcasts in the coming weeks. We encourage you to stay tuned to our social media pages to learn more about upcoming broadcasts.

HIGH ATTAINERS AWARDS EVENING 2024

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting our Celebration and Achievement Evening, where we recognised the accomplishments of our Year 9 and 10 students. The formal event was attended by parents and carers who were eager to see their children receive their awards.

The event was a fantastic celebration of their achievements, dedication, and commitment to their studies, as well as their contributions to the wider community. We were thrilled to acknowledge the hard work and determination that our students had demonstrated throughout the year. In addition to the awards ceremony, we were also treated to a special performance by the students who recently participated in the ‘Saluting our Sisters’ creative workshop. They recited their beautifully crafted poems with grace and poise, and the audience gave them a well-deserved round of applause.

Overall, the Celebration and Achievement Evening was a resounding success, and we are proud of all our students' achievements.

FOOTBALL AND RUGBY

Our annual Friday night game against St. Joseph's School in Ipswich is always an exciting fixture. This year, we managed to win all four games, which is a first for our team! The boys put up an exceptional performance, and we couldn't be prouder of them. It's always a pleasure to play against such a great school, and we look forward to the next game. Unfortunately, we didn't get a picture of the Year 9's 35-17 victory, but it's a memory that we'll cherish forever.

The U14B Boys football team has been performing exceptionally well, having recently secured a spot in the last 8 of the National B Team Cup. They achieved this feat with a fantastic win over Boston, and followed it up with another impressive performance, defeating the Bedford Academy A team 3-1 on Tuesday.

The U14A Boys football team has also been making waves, having earned a place in the semi-finals of the County Cup. They put on a dominant display against Wixams, securing a convincing victory.

Meanwhile, the U14 Girls A team has also been enjoying success, having made it to the County Semi-finals with a remarkable win over Manshead in the quarter-finals. Not to be outdone, the U14 Girls rugby team has also been performing fantastically, recently securing a hard-fought victory against Robert Clack away from home.

EQUESTRIAN TEAM

Over the weekend, Isla, Connie, and Harriet were out competing for the Samuel Whitbread Academy Equestrian Team. They all competed in show jumping events at various heights, including 70cm, 90cm, 1m, and 1.10m. It was the first time Isla and Connie had ever participated in a competition for SWA. Connie had only recently recovered from an injury after a nasty fall earlier this year, so it took great courage and determination to participate. Nevertheless, she managed to jump a brave round. Isla displayed amazing skill and went clear in all the rounds. Harriet and her horse, Star, performed exceptionally well, taking home first place in both the 1m and 1.10m categories. This impressive performance earned them a spot at the prestigious Hickstead competition later this year.

Congratulations to all the girls for their fantastic performances!

ATTENDANCE REMINDERS

Reporting an Absence / Appointments - Students in Year 9, 10 and 11

Morning Registration

Please report absences from morning registration by using one of the following methods, preferably before 8.20 am:

Telephone the school on 01462 629900 (option 1) or 01462 628041 and follow the instructions for 'reporting a student absence' or via the Edulink website or Edulink App by selecting the absence reporting icon.

This will ensure absences are recorded correctly and in a timely manner.

Please do not send notifications directly to tutors, teaching staff, pastoral teams or via the school contact link on our website as this can delay the reporting process and, as a result, absence calls may be sent out unnecessarily.

Please be aware that the software used to contact you if your child is absent, and we are unaware of the reason, will alert the person who is listed as Contact 1 on your child’s records. The external number that you will be called from is 0114 303 4042 (Sheffield area code).

Leaving during the school day

If your child needs to leave during the school day, please could you provide them with a note on the day.  This note can be shown to teaching staff/reception, and it will enable them to sign out. If they have a note, you will not need to email or telephone.

If you have any medical appointment slips/letters that you are happy to share with us, they can be handed in at reception at the time of signing out, or you can send them to me via email amartin@bestacademies.org.uk if that is easier.

Please feel free to contact the attendance office, 01462 628041 if you require any further information.

Term Dates

Term dates are published on our website and may differ from those published by Central Bedfordshire.
