A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

The half term has gone by incredibly quickly and new students to our academy have settled in really well!

We have achieved so much in the last seven weeks: every class in Year 9 completed their library induction; Year 11 Geography students undertook field work in Cambridge; pantomime auditions took place (oh no they didn’t!); Sixth Form students started their global citizen seminars; the netball fundraiser was a tremendous success; extra-curricular participation has rocketed, and our Year 8 Open Evenings were bigger and better than ever. Last weekend, members of our choir also opened the BEST governors annual conference to great acclaim.

Following the very successful Year 8 open evenings earlier this month, this week the PE department held our very first Rugby Open Evening for prospective players interested in joining our academy. The event was really well attended and Year 8 students from across the county got to hear from staff, students and professional players (ex SWA student Tom Litchfield and our own staff member Mr Arthur) before touring our amazing facilities.

Unfortunately, this half term we have seen an increase in uniform which does not conform to the school’s uniform expectations. Can I remind everyone that if you purchase skirts or trousers from providers other than our agreed provider, then you need to have the item approved by the pastoral team and purchase a school badge. In these difficult times, please can I remind parents/carers that we have a range of hardly worn, second hand uniform (some of which still has labels!) which once cleaned, we donate to anyone who asks, so if you need any uniform then please contact Rob Graves, Associate Principal.

As part of this month’s Black History Month, students took part in a number of events such as assemblies, guest speakers and tutor time activities. It was a great success and I would like to thank all the staff and students who planned and took part in all the events.

Next half term, Year 11 and Year 13 have their mock examinations, which provide students with a valuable opportunity to assess where they are at this point in the course, learn which topics they need to work on and improve their understanding and explore misconceptions. I wish them the best of luck in their preparation for these.

Finally, on Thursday Professor Hubbard and I led a very successful session at MK:U with all the Sixth Form leads from across the county. This was part of a project funded by the Connelly Foundation and includes almost every Sixth Form in Bedfordshire, along with universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Bedford, Cranfield and Hertfordshire. The aim of the project is to increase the aspirations of Sixth Form students in Bedfordshire and to share good practice.

Have a safe and restful half term break. I look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 1st November.

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Miss A Priano

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our Year 9 students on a brilliant first half term at Samuel Whitbread Academy. As a year group they have managed to accumulate over 7000 achievement points reflecting our school values and demonstrating a fantastic attitude to learning.

The first of three subject reports this year was released this week via Edulink. On these reports, you will see your child’s attitude to learning and independent learning reflected on by subject teachers. Overall, teachers have reported very positively on our Year 9 students and they continue to impress with their academic learning. The Year 9 team would like to thank all parents for their support with these students, and we look forward to them continuing successfully in the months ahead.

When we return back after half term, Year 9 will have small assessments in some of their Maths lessons. They will be assessed on what they have learned in their first half term at Samuel Whitbread, which includes linear graphs, testing conjectures and forming/solving equations. They will be allowed to use a calculator.

Another key date for the calendar will be our Year 9 options evening where you will be able to make an appointment to meet with your child’s tutor to discuss the progress so far at Samuel Whitbread and to visit subject stalls to find out more information about the GCSE curriculum and to speak with subject specialists. This will take place on Tuesday 8th November.

I would like to wish all Year 9s a well-deserved, restful half term and look forward to welcoming them back on Tuesday 1st November.

Year 10, Mrs L Clark

As the first half term of Year 10 draws to a close, we would like to celebrate the fantastic successes of our students! We have seen some fantastic work being completed in options subjects - from projects about child development in Health & Social Care, to students learning about real life business models in Enterprise; we have even been treated to deli-quality cupcakes in Food Technology! Year 10 students have really been enjoying their new subjects and have been working incredibly hard. Well done, Year 10.

May I take this opportunity to remind you that hoodies are not permitted. As the weather becomes cooler, students must continue to wear their blazer, with an option of a black jumper and coat for extra warmth. Students who arrive at school wearing a hoodie will be asked to remove them and may have the item confiscated until the end of the school day.

Wishing you all a lovely half term break. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday 2nd November.

Year 11, Miss E Prow

Year 11 have had an amazing half term, they have settled back into school routine well and continued to show a positive attitude towards their learning. When we return back after half term our students will be three weeks away from mock exams. With this in mind, please take the time to have a well-earned rest over the half term break and ensure that you begin plan your revision timetable in preparation for your upcoming mocks.

Well done Year 11 to great start to the year.

Year 13, Mr C Tonking

We have had a busy first half term: lots of extra support, guidance and opportunities offered to students.

The next half term will see students enter another Internal Progression Exam (EPI) window. The timetable has been shared with students and they will need to be preparing for these exams. We have shared revision timetable templates with them during registration as we strongly advise our students to be organising their revision. It can be a stressful period with these exams and UCAS deadlines and so we want to make sure that our Year 13s are also looking after their wellbeing. As part of this we have organised a weekly mindfulness drop in sessions with a mindfulness coach. Please do encourage your sons and daughters to attend this if you feel it will be of benefit to them. They are reminded of the times and location every week so will be aware.

Thank you all for your support and we look forward to a really busy and productive end to the term after a well-earned break.

ART

This term our Year 10 art students started their Culture project. One of the first pieces they created was a tonal still life drawing. Still life drawing is a great way to build essential drawing skills like hand-eye coordination, creating shadow and perspective, and noticing finer details.

Here are some examples from Miss J Redcliffe class:

YEAR 11 - SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING

Sixth Form open evening takes place on Tuesday 15th November from 3.30pm - 7.00pm. This is the same evening as the Year 11 tutor PRE.

We are currently editing our Sixth Form handbook and subject prospectus as there are a few small changes and additions. These will be updated on the website after half term in prep for the open evening. In the meantime, what is on the website is for last year's applicants, but the majority of this is still in place for 2023 applicants. Therefore, please use these areas as an advanced guide to Sixth Form options:

  • Applications & Admissions Page
  • Sixth Form Open Evening Page
  • Sixth Form Curriculum & Courses Page

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Well done to our Year 9 Star Bakers this term, our students have been working hard on their first practical lessons making a colourful and creative salad. We are looking forward to seeing the pasta bakes next half-term!

NETBALL ACADEMY FUNDRAISER

Monday saw 60 fabulous netballers participate in a netball marathon fundraiser. The camaraderie and fun throughout the day was sensational and we couldn’t be prouder. It was lovely to see students from the rugby and football academies getting involved on the day today too

A fantastic event to raise the profile of girls’ sport.
