A Message From Principal, Mr Martin

We have had a fantastic penultimate week at Samuel Whitbread Academy and we still have the House Olympics to come next week!

Our Proms went extremely well: the Year 13 Prom was held at Amberleigh Gardens in Cotton End and the Year 11 Prom was held at Offley House. Events like this take an incredible amount of organisation and I would like to thank the staff and the two student Prom Committees involved in putting the two events together. Over the years, students have arrived to Prom by various means including: limos, Ferraris, classic cars, Aston Martins, fire engines, helicopters and even double decker buses. But current Year 11 student Ava topped them all and arrived on horseback!

This week, Year 12 students have been out on work experience with various different companies all across the county and beyond. Again, I’d like to thank the careers and Sixth Form teams for all their time and effort in coordinating work experience for over 200 students. The Sixth Form team also held their induction day last week and students experienced taster lessons in several of the 36 different courses that we run at SWA. It was an extremely worthwhile event and it was great to see so many of our Year 11 students back in school, as well as the external applicants from schools all across Bedfordshire.

After the successful, but slightly wet, Gold DofE practice expeditions last month, this week saw the real event and this time the challenge was the heat. I'm glad to say they all returned safe and sound, if a little pink in the cheeks. I would like to thank all of the staff for giving up their time and for coordinating all of the different aspects that make up the Gold Award.

Last week in Food studies, Year 10 students made Afternoon Tea for their family. I can personally vouch for many of the cakes and brownies, which were superb and no doubt thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. I know all of the students would want me to thank the staff for helping them to produce some fantastic looking cakes, sandwiches and handmade sausage rolls.

It has been a jam packed term for the Music, Art, Textiles, Dance and Drama departments and this concluded last week with A Night at the Musicals. It was an amazing production, with performances from musicals such as Annie, Cabaret and Grease. The talent on display was truly amazing and the highlight for me was the song from Les Miserable, involving over 40 students. I would like to thank all of the staff involved and for all of their work this year.

This week the PE department ran sports days for Year 9 and 10, as well as organising a fantastic Sports Awards Evening to celebrate all of our students’ achievements this year. It would be impossible for me to list all of this year’s impressive fixture results in this newsletter; but, the highlights this year certainly have to be our national cup runs in football, as well as national awards for gymnastic, girls rugby and our first ever world silver medal for dance. We still have the world championships in taekwondo at the end of the month in Holland and we are hopeful for success.

Finally, if you haven't already seen it, please check out our leavers video on our YouTube account made by our fantastic media department, which along with the usual performances from teachers and support staff, this year includes a special guest and ex alumni.

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Mrs L Clark

It has been another busy month as we fast approach the end of the Year 9 academic year. Thank you to everyone who attended PRE appointments with your child's subject teachers. The feedback from both parents and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the fantastic opportunity for discussing preparations for GCSE courses. On that note, please do keep an eye out for any communication from subject leaders regarding how your child can use the summer break wisely to prepare for September.

This week we have also had the pleasure of the PE department hosting an incredibly successful Year 9 Sports Day! The year team are so proud of how our Year 9 students participated and conducted themselves throughout the day. Students not only took part in a variety of different competitions - including bench ball and tug of war - but more importantly, took part in supporting one another. Watching nearly the entire year group taking part in an impromptu, and energetic, performance of the Cha Cha Slide was certainly a highlight, too! Thank you, Year 9, for living our values and showing what the Samuel Whitbread family can do.

Year 10, Mrs C Kirkman

Last week our Year 10 students received their latest Progress and Attitude to Learning reports. It has been pleasing to see many Year 10’s using this opportunity to have discussions with their subject teachers to find out what they can do to move closer to or exceed their target grade. I would encourage all of the year group to take this mature approach to their academic studies so that they can have the best start to Year 11.

This week our students also participated in Year 10 Sports Day which enabled students to compete in a range of team events including netball and football as well as some athletic track events including 100m and 4x4 relay. I was really impressed with the team spirit throughout the day and it was great to see everyone get involved.

The annual school musical took place last week and I was blown away by the exceptional talent of all students involved both on the stage, in the orchestra and in the tech crew (who deserve their own special mention for running the sound and lights for the entire show by themselves!) I would like to congratulate all of the students from our year group that were involved. Your hard work and effort certainly paid off!

I would like to ask all parents and carers to support the year group as they move into Year 11 by ensuring that their child has the correct uniform. Our uniform standards can be found on the school website here and I would encourage you to have a look, particularly when choosing school shoes as there are strict rules around this. Please remember that some shoe shops sell black trainers in the school shoe section but these will not be accepted in line with our uniform policy.

Year 12, Mr C Tonking

This week our Year 12 students have been out on work experience. We have been ringing and visiting students and are really pleased with how they have approached this opportunity. We want to thank all of the parents and guardians for their support in sourcing work experience and getting them to and from their work place. We look forward to hearing more when they are back in for the last few days of this term.

On Thursday 21st July, students will be partaking in our annual House Olympics, and on Wednesday 20th July we have our Year 12 Sports Day. With the hot weather this is all subject to change, but we want to remind students about dressing and hydrating appropriately for these days. We hope these last few days gives our students some of the fun they have missed in school these last two years.

YEAR 11 PROM

On Tuesday evening, our Year 11 students danced the night away at their enchanted forest themed prom. Offley Place was the perfect venue for the students to enjoy ice-cream, sweets, the magic mirror photo booth and the dance floor. Thank you to all the members of staff who helped to set up and organise the night, and a special thank you to Miss Godfrey (Pastoral Support Officer for Year 11) who was in charge of running the event, it was a fabulous evening.

YEAR 13 PROM

Last Friday, Year 13 enjoyed an evening at AmberLeigh Gardens. A well-deserved celebration for our Year 13 who missed their Year 11 prom and GCSE because of the pandemic. We hoped that the students enjoyed their evening. A thank you to the staff and students involved in organising and running the event.

HOT WEATHER REMINDER

As part of our hot weather provision and to support students whilst at school on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July, we are allowing students to attend in non-uniform on both days. Students can continue to attend in their PE kit should they wish.

We would recommend that students wear cotton based clothing and we ask that the choice of clothing continues to be appropriate for school, covering vulnerable areas from the sun, such as shoulders, backs of neck and midriffs to reduce the risk of sunburn.

If your child chooses to go out in the sun at break and lunch please ensure they have sun cream, a suitable hat and a large water bottle (where possible) that can be refilled throughout the day.  Students are able to fill their water bottles between lesson changeovers and at all other social times to ensure they keep hydrated throughout the day.

Should there be any further updates over the weekend, we will contact you via EduLink and place a message on our Facebook Page and website.

GROUP 4 PROJECT

The Group 4 project has gained popularity at Samuel Whitbread Academy in the last few years and this year we have had the pleasure of hosting Etonbury Academy and Robert Bloomfield Academy Years 8 and 9 respectively.

The day was run by our undergraduate interns and consisted of a series of science and mathematics challenges to test their ingenuity as well as their creative thinking. After some stiff competition Samuel Whitbread was crowned the overall champions with Etonbury winning the team spirit award and second place over all. A fantastic day was had by all pupils, and we hope all who attended enjoyed the day.

YEAR 12 DofE

This week a group of Year 12 Gold Duke of Edinburgh students travelled to Brecon Beacons in South Wales to complete their expedition.

NIGHT AT THE MUSICALS

The last production of the year was outstanding! Students across the year groups performed songs from your favourite musicals: Grease, Mean Girls, Little shop of horrors, and Wicked. A huge well done to all our students and a special thank you to students for stepping in to cover illness, you all acted as professionals. Thank you to the staff who spared their free time to help organise and run the event.

YEAR 10 AFTERNOON TEA WEEK

The Year 10 food technology studies students have completed their Afternoon Tea assessments. They had to produce and present three dishes that would be suitable to be served for Afternoon Tea. In the afternoon, parents were invited to taste the students’ work and provide feedback. Each student created their dishes with flying colours, they should be very proud of themselves.

SPORTS AWARDS

On Monday evening over 300 guest were invited to the PE Sports awards evening, which is designed to celebrate the students’ hard work and achievements in sport this academic year. There was an award for each of the sports and the three different age categories (U14, U15, and U16). Then the three main awards for Team of the Year which our Gymnastics team claimed, a Raising Star award which was given to Dan K and the last award of the evening was Sports Personality of the Year which was awarded to Lydia N.

YEAR 9 SPORTS DAY

Despite having to move Year 9 Sports Day due to the hot weather, the event was a success. The day started off with form classes competing in Netball, Football and Bench Ball, it was lovely to see form teachers getting involved with the students.

After break time the students made their way down to the track, where representatives from each form competed in 100m sprint, 4x4 relay, and mixed 4x4 relay. Students also took on the tricky three-legged race, after this the students had to bounce back and get ready for knock-out rounds of tug of war. A huge well done 9L who won overall.

YEAR 10 SPORTS DAY

Year 10 was the first year group to take on Sports Day this year! Like Year 9, the Year 10 form classes competed in Netball, Bench Ball and Football. In the 10D vs 10K football match, we saw form tutors Miss Dainton in goal and Mr Jamil running on the pitch helping their form classes out with missing numbers. After break, (add comma) the students went down to the athletics track to compete in the 100 meters sprint, 4x4 relay race and mixed relay race. Year 10 went full steam ahead in the three-legged race, a few students got their lefts and rights mixed up, but they managed to finish the race. Next was the knock-out tug of war, well done to Mr Unite’s form who were undefeated! The overall winner of the day was 10L, well done to Miss Bradshaw’s class!

BOYS’ CRICKET REGIONAL FINALS

A huge well done to our cricketers, who finished runners up in the regional finals at Kimbolton School, losing in the final to a very strong Harlington Upper School. The boys are a credit to the school!
