A Message from Principal, Mr Martin

The first six weeks of 2022 have gone by in a flash.

This has certainly been a challenging half term for schools across the country and Samuel Whitbread has been no different. With over 20 staff members off school with Covid at one point and, at its peak, over 150 students off school following a positive Covid result. Last week, we had to take the difficult decision to ask Year 12 students to work independently at home, to create the capacity for staff to cover lessons in Years 9, 10 and 11. I’m pleased to say the number of student cases is declining and this may be due to the second round of vaccinations; the number of positive cases amongst staff has also reduced.

On a more positive note, it has been fantastic to see students performing in drama productions this half term and I would like to commend everyone involved in the KS4 play ‘DNA’, which was well received by an audience of parents and friends. It's so important for the drama GCSE students to have the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience and they clearly enjoyed being back on stage. After the break KS5 students are performing ‘100’.

This week also saw the unveiling of the play ‘Whitbread v Colston’ written, directed, and filmed by the English, Drama, Film and Media departments. It’s a great resource for schools wishing to debate the issue of statues commemorating people associated with the slave trade and will be available on our website once it has been trialed by Robert Bloomfield Academy pupils.

We have even managed to run some trips this half term. Firstly, the A Level geographers finally managed to get away on their field studies trip to Dorset, enabling them to complete a key component of their course; previously this has been postponed twice due to Covid. Secondly, the food studies students managed to visit a local restaurant to observe a real kitchen in action during lunchtime service. These are certainly signs of things starting to get back to normal and we look forward to future events.

We have had another fantastic half term of sport with some impressive results in netball, football and rugby. In Rugby 7s, we dominated a U16 tournament last weekend, which included many of the strongest schools in the country. Last Friday, ex-student Tom Litchfield scored for England in the U20 Six Nations game against Scotland. He plays again on Friday against Italy.

Messages From Heads of Year

Year 9, Miss L Scott

Another successful half term for Year 9! We have been pleased to hear many positive conversations about option choices taking place during registration. Our Year 9s are engaged, excited and looking forward to all the opportunities that lay ahead in their GCSE years. Thank you to everyone who has supported this process with conversations at home and with tutors. The Google Form, allowing students to submit their options choices, is now live on our website. The final deadline is the 18th March. If you have any questions, please do look through the detailed information on our website.

Thank you for your continued efforts in ensuring our Year 9s arrive on time for registration. I am looking forward to another term filled with important sessions after the February break, so please do continue to stress the importance of registration with your child.

Next week is a wonderful opportunity for rest, recovery and spending time with loved ones after a busy start to the year. We are looking forward to seeing Year 9 back next half term ready to learn, well equipped and looking smart in their uniforms! Wishing you all a lovely break.

Year 10, Mr P Johnson

Thank you for your support this half term. Although a short one, it has been full of challenges which our students have met head on. Our new behaviour policy has been well received by the majority and students are really settling into their GCSE subjects now. Please also ensure that uniform is perfect upon return.

There have been some fantastic successes with incredible achievements in sport, music and dance. We have received a massive amount of achievement points as a year group which I'm incredibly proud of.

Please take care over half term. And remember our key value this year: RESPECT. Please respect each other, the wider community, and yourselves. I look forward to seeing you after half term.

Year 11, Miss A Duguid

It is safe to say that this half term has gone by very quickly. It has been a jam packed with students receiving their mock results, Covid Vaccinations, parents evening, theatre company visits and has finished with students being given their Save the Dates for the Year 11 Prom!

Looking forward to the next half term, I just wanted to take a moment to remind you that mock examinations will take place from 28th February – 11th March. Students should have a copy of their mock timetable on Edulink so please check to make sure it is there. If you haven't started revising, now would be a good time to take the first step!

We hope you have a restful and enjoyable half term,

The Year 11 Team

Year 12, Mr C Tonking

Our Year 12s are past the deadline for submitting their work experience placement forms. If any student has still not secured a place, please can you encourage them to talk to their tutor initially, but also to speak with the school careers team. This team, are coordinating the work experience programme, and will have contacts that could be useful to our students.

We do have an opportunity in school, and there are places left. This will include a short activity working with our Year 10 students and engaging them in activities around Sixth Form at Samuel Whitbread. This will be a full week's placement at school, working with an external company Att10tive which works with young people in developing a range of skills and experience.

Att10tive have already been working with a small group of Year 12s for a Youth Ambassador programme, and we have been impressed by their commitment. These students are now working together to put on an employability fair for younger students at the school, with guests coming in. If this type of event planning is something that might interest other students, then the work experience option here could be right for them. Please tell them to speak with Mr Tonking before the final places are secured.

Year 13, Mrs S Hoad

At the time of writing Year 13 have had their reports and should be preparing for their upcoming IPEs (Internal Progression Exams) in March. We have completed target setting for each subject during form time this week, and students are reminded that they need to attend at least six mornings per fortnight in order to participate in form activities and access useful support such as apprenticeship applications.

Summer exam timetables are available through the school website and the contingency day this year is the 29th June, up to and including this date must be kept available for exams.

We are very happy to announce that the prom date is Friday 8th July at Amberleigh Gardens, and students should be able to pay their deposit via ParentMail. The non-refundable deposit (£5) is due by Friday 1st April and the £15 remaining balance due by 27th May. We are very much looking forward to this event, which should be a lovely celebration of all that they will have earned.

Attendance Information for Year 9, 10 and 11

We would like to remind parents and carers of the process when reporting a student absence from school or leaving during the day.

Absence from morning registration (COVID19 related) should be reported using the Google form sent via Edulink or the following link -  https://forms.gle/VQCr3M9zdNzKmSEk6

Please note that you may need to resubmit this form, for example, if a positive result is received having previously reported that your child has symptoms. If you have reported an absence via the Google form you do not need to leave a voicemail or email to report the absence.

Absence from morning registration (non COVID19 related) - student absence should be reported by telephoning 01462 629900 (option 1) or 01462 628041 before 11am. If you have left a voicemail, you do not need to send an email.

Appointments should, wherever possible, be arranged outside of academy hours. If this cannot be avoided and your child needs to leave for an appointment during the school day, please could you provide them with a note. This will need to be shown to their teacher if they need to leave whilst in a lesson and to reception staff when signing out. If they have a note, there is no additional need to contact us to make us aware.

If you have medical appointment slips or letters that you are happy to share with us, students can hand these in at reception at the time of signing out or a copy can be sent via email: amartin@bestacademies.org.uk

Term dates are published on our website and may differ from those published by Central Bedfordshire.

If you need any further information or have any questions in regard to attendance, please contact the Attendance Office on 01462 628041 or via email: amartin@bestacademies.org.uk

GEOGRAPHY TRIP

Currently 61 Year 12 students are away on a five day Geography field trip to Dorset. The trip is designed to support students on a part of the course which contributes to 20% of their final grade. After almost two years of trip, it is great that the students are able to go out and put their knowledge to particle use. Plan to be back in Bedfordshire on Sunday evening.

SWA DIPLOMAS

Last week, we celebrated the exceptional achievements of those completing the SWA Diploma. Conducting a range of projects to extend and challenge their thinking, they have all demonstrated resilience and determination. What bright futures they have ahead of them! Well done!

DNA

Year 11 drama students put on a fantastic production of DNA last week, the play that they study for their GCSE. They had worked extremely hard since September to put this production together and did an outstanding job. Special mention to the two students who stood in at the last minute for people who were unfortunately unable to perform to ensure that the show would go ahead!

Well done to everyone involved! Tickets for the next production 100 can be bought at: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/swaconcert

ENGLISH

Last Friday, Year 11 had the amazing opportunity to watch a live production of Romeo and Juliet, which is part of their GCSE English Literature exam. The production company, Box Clever Theatre pulled together parts from the original play and combined it with modern day language to help the students have a better understanding of the play.

ECO COMMITTEE NEWS

Each year the committee plan to plant as many trees as we can using the fundraising we do. This will help to mitigate our carbon footprint. This year we are planting 100 trees in the forest of Marston Vale. The committee will be planting these at a site near Houghton House on the afternoon of the 16th March. This will obviously add to the 2020 plus trees we planted last year. Planting trees is one of the most simple and effective ways that everybody can take part in to combat climate change. As the tree grows it keeps incorporating carbon from the carbon dioxide in the air into it’s cells and tissues, acting as a carbon store, locking it away from the atmosphere.

We are on track to go ahead with our Eco fashion show. The aim of which is to highlight the beauty of reusing and repurposing instead of buying new. All the funds raised from the clothes will fund more tree planting next academic year. Please keep donating your clothes for this, we need men’s and women’s of all sizes please.

And don’t forget the future event in the summer for our big book swap for course textbooks and much more.

Any enquiries regarding the Eco committee within the school, please forward them to Ms Ambrose.

BIOLOGY COMPETITION

Year 9, 10 and 12, if you wish to take part in this year's Biology competitions in conjunction with the Royal Society of Biology, please email Ms Ambrose.

ASTRONOMY CLUB

The Astronomy club are going to the Bedford Observatory on 22nd March, to continue their enrichment by experiencing the planetarium and getting instructional usage of their fantastic telescopes. We are very much looking forward to this. Any interest in the Astronomy club, please email Ms Ambrose.

NETBALL

On Saturday 29th January, the U19A netball team travelled to Stanborough School to play in the U19 Regional tournament. The day was set to be sunny but very windy - not ideal playing conditions but a lot better than the cold.

The team took their first game against Wymondham College with ease; 12-2. Player of the Match (POM) went to: Lauren Appleby. Another win in the second game against Framlingham College; POM: Maddy Downing. A tough third game against a relentless Brentwood School ended in a draw 7-7, POM going again to Lauren Appleby. The team was on a high and looking good heading into the final two matches of the pool play. St Albans High School were a dominant force and we took our first loss of the day 13-5. POM: Ruby Blair. Our final game of the day against Stephen Perse had the potential to shake things up, a win meant the results could come down to a countback, the team were excited to leave it all out on the court. The team started strong, scoring a couple of goals in quick succession. Stephen Perse levelled up and some silly errors by us gave them enough balls to take a comfortable win 13-6. POM: Kizzy Angell. We ended up 4th in our pool, narrowly missing out on top six which was our game heading into the competition.

A big thank you to Mrs Kaye and Miss Darnell for giving up their Saturday to come and play their part in what was an awesome day.
