From Pompeii to Pizza-Making: An Italian Adventure
An action-packed journey through ruins, lemon groves, and coastal roads leaves lasting memories for our Year 10 Geography students.
During the half-term, a group of our Year 10 Geography students embarked on an unforgettable trip to Italy, immersing themselves in ancient history, stunning landscapes, and delicious food.
The group departed in the early hours of Monday morning and wasted no time diving into the itinerary. Upon landing, they headed straight to Herculaneum to explore the remarkably well-preserved ruins. Though smaller than Pompeii, Herculaneum offered a unique glimpse into the past, with highlights including carbonised wooden structures that have survived nearly two millennia.
On Tuesday, the group visited the expansive ruins of Pompeii. Students were especially fascinated by a newly excavated area where they observed archaeologists at work, uncovering mosaic floors not seen in over 2,000 years. The afternoon brought a guided hike up Mount Vesuvius, offering panoramic views of the surrounding cities and coastline.
Wednesday began with a visit to a working farm, where students toured lemon groves, met goats, and learnt how to make their own traditional pizzas for lunch. The afternoon was spent exploring the charming town of Sorrento, with time to enjoy its history and hospitality.
The scenic Amalfi Coast was Thursday’s highlight, as the group travelled along what is considered one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world. Their journey ended in the picturesque town of Ravello, where students explored and picked up a few souvenirs.
On Friday, before heading home, the group visited the volcanic landscape of Solfatara in the Phlegrean Fields and toured the Flavian Amphitheatre in Pozzuoli, catching a glimpse of ancient gladiatorial history.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Rowell said,
The students were all amazing; their behaviour was exemplary, and we had so much fun. They seemed to love the activities—though perhaps the regular trips to the supermarket for random crisps and snacks were the real highlight! Sunsets from the hotel veranda will live long in all of our memories. I’d like to thank the team who supported on the trip, giving their time to look after the students, and the students for their wonderful attitudes throughout. Ciao.
