Academic Referral

What is Academic Referral?

Any time a student falls behind or is struggling in a course, his or her teacher may choose (normally following a conversation with their parents) to send an academic referral home that will be recorded on SIMS (the school management system). Students may be referred for a wide variety of reasons including failure to submit work, consecutive low test scores, lack of equipment, failure to hand in coursework/homework etc. The referral is a formal record about what has happened in the past and is an opportunity for students to set themselves goals and think about what needs to happen in the future. The system is aimed at keeping parents involved and up to date with their child’s progress. The system allows parents the opportunity to contact the staff member that has sent the referral to discuss ways in which their child can be supported to achieve their potential.
